Fatmata was a special light that we were fortunate enough to experience for a short but memorable time in our closely-knit work family known as the Umoja African-American Resource Group at the American Red Cross. As we continue to learn about the many initiatives that she was passionate about and the impact on the people she loved and worked with, we are deeply grateful for the mark she made on our team. We send our condolences to her family and pray that you are surrounded in comfort knowing that your beautiful Fatmata is cherished by so many. May you find strength in healing and joy in the good memories she left with you.
With our deepest sympathy,
The American Red Cross Umoja African-American Resource Group

Fatmata was such a sweet soul and great friend. During her time working at UMDNJ-SOM now Rowan-Virtua SOM we would go out to lunch (sushi was one of her fav) and we share conversations about family. Her family was everything. So blessed to have met you, you will truly be missed. My condolences to her mom, son, brothers & entire family.

This is a tragic loss, and I am so saddened by the shocking news. Fatmata and I were co-chairs of our Red Cross Regional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and I had the pleasure of working very closely with her. Fatmata was a wonderful woman who was passionate, full of energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to DEI, humanitarian work, and the overall Red Cross mission. She will be greatly missed, and my thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones.

My first thoughts when I meet Fatmata was she has such a bright and and loving person and this was only when we were teens. It’s saddens my heart that I will not have the chance to express what a beautiful women she was. My heart goes out to the KABIA family.

I am heartbroken to hear of Fatmata's passing. I had the great pleasure of working with her at Rutgers and calling her a friend. Her tenacity, kindness, fire and intelligence shined in all she did. All were better for having known and worked with her. I have no words but can only send love, comfort and sorrow to all who were touched by her light, especially to her family.

I have no words to express my sorrow so I share this passage by poet Ellen Brenneman having changed the gender in the poem for the moment.
Don’t think of her as gone away
her journey’s just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched…
for nothing loved is ever lost
and she was loved so much.
We will miss you my friend.

I had the pleasure of working with Fatmata for some years at UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine and later crossing paths in the Rowan University School of Education Doctoral program. We kept in touch over the years and recently spoke about her completing her dissertation. I am so sad to hear of her passing. Every encounter with her was positive, and she will be missed. My condolences to her son, family, and everyone whose lives she touched.

It was my privilege to be Fatmata's colleague on the Board of the Southern New Jersey Chapter of the American Red Cross and also on the Red Cross's Regional Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Fatmata was a leader in public service - an officer of the chapter board and co-chair of the DE&I Committee. She was highly intelligent, deeply committed to social justice, warm-hearted, generous and caring. Her Red Cross colleagues viewed her with affection and respect. We will miss her and remember her.
