LIFE STORY
Samuel Benson, Jr. affectionately known by his family and friends as“Fruit Man” and “Sammy” went home
to be with the Lord on October 20, 2017. He was born on April 13, 1960 in Camden, New Jersey to the late
Samuel and Erma Benson. In his early years Sammy received his education at the Mt.Carmen Catholic School. He furthered his education in theCamden Public School Systems. In 2002 Sammy gained
employment at a barber shop with Tony, Zack and Mr.Russell. You couldn’t catch him without a broom in his
hand. He also enjoyed working at Colby Shop with hisfamily. Sammy loved painting and spending time with hisfamily and friends. He also loved playing horse shoes with Chico and Mr. Holmes. He spent a lot of time at the park and often took longwalks. In 1983, he met Peggy Freeman whom later would become the love of his life. Sammy helped raise Peggy’s children and grandchildren. He was a fun loving person but he could be private at times. His favorite song was A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cook. He would often joke and say “I was born by the river”. We sorrowfully mourn his passing but we know he is no longer suffering and he’s in a better place. Sammy was predeceased in death by his parents Samuel Benson Sr. and Erma Benson. He leaves to cherish his fond memories his sisters Darlene, Dorothy, Cynthia and Deborah and brother Andre; nephews Desmond, Marquise, Rashan, Dante, Andre Jr. (AJ), and Marcus; nieces Ciera and Tia and two great nieces; a host of close friends Nardi, Howey and Pee Wee and Larry Freeman aka Grandpa; a special cousin Beatrice whom he adored and his best friend Peggy.
