Maurice and I had many long talks about the youth of Bridgeton. We would talk at length about special our students were and how proud we were to have taught them. A true gentleman in every sense of the word...you will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing you. God bless you Maurice.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Maurice DeShields. He was such a genuine person and really cared deeply about others and especially about maintaining the accuracy and promotion of black history; music and art in the community. A health nut to the core with educating people about different herbs and spices. When he was given the opportunity to teach, although it was difficult at first, within a few years he found his footing and “hit the ball out of the park” as he integrated black history into his classrooms. If not mistaken he won Teacher of the Year twice. If you ever had a conversation with Maurice it was a long conversation because he loved to engage and dig deep down and unpack a situation. He took such great care of his mother and his aunt during their time on this earth and always put them first before his own needs. Maurice DeShields will be sorely missed in the classroom, his community, family, and all that had the opportunity to get to know him. My sincere condolences to his remaining family.
